Cool $13 domain names?

Did anyone here see that article on slashdot about the tucows $13 domain registration?

Sorry I don't have a link, someone please post it up!

Any thoughts about this? Think it'll be a reality?

Greetings Matt C, welcome to the forum.

The complete details of the program you asked can be found at this website run by tucows:

From reading this it sounds more like a program for resellers to sell domain names, and not something for a casual user just to buy a domain name.

Although if the "wholesale" price of the domain name is $13 per year, that should have an impact in driving prices down overall.

As is usually the case in economics, when someone comes into the market as a new guy they often cut prices, causes the larger players to lower prices. If the larger companies drop to $25 per year, and some unknown offers me a registration at $15, the larger company would still be a better value, since they have been around and are established. My fear in going with a new start up is what happens to your account (domain name) if they fail?

Also it should be noted that this new project headed by tucows is not off the ground yet, so it's not going to be known for sometime if it gets off the ground how well it will fly.

I havent read the article about tucows selling cheap domains, but I know of 2 current cheap domain name registrars. Joker.com (approx. US$36/2 years with I heard a soon to be option of being able to register a domain for upto 10 years) and totalnic.net(US$35/2 years) I've only used totalnic.net myself but know people who have used joker.com and so far no dramas using either.
