Question Why is this site down? DUDE! I can't reach the Forums.

We certainly understand your frustration. Let's carefully examine the issue, take a long walk on the beach, and try and offer some tips and facts.

Geek/talk @ GeekVillage deploys a number of procedures and services to constantly monitor our dedicated servers uptime and your ability to reach the site. We share your concern and even pay for some of the more advanced services.

1. The server is monitored from numerous locations throughout the world 24/7/365. This procedure includes a Ping and an HTTP request. Locations are:

Oklahoma City USA
London UK
Los Angeles USA
Frankfurt GERMANY
Detroit USA

If one location times out it moves onto the next location and so on untill it hits the alarm threshold and then I'm notified via page, SMS message, called, and emailed. This service also retains a very very detailed log of all activity.

2. 24/7/365 other diagnostics run to insure that the server is up and the necessary services are running properly.

3. We can also examine the vB Admin and our banner script to see if trafic levels are normal.

4. If the server goes down, we always post this on geek/talk. If we anticpate down time for repairs or fixes, we alwyas post this.

5. Our dedicated server is hosted with Ventures Online. They provide a quality Tier 1 Backbone.

Every site on the Internet experiences "down time". The notion of 100% uptime is false and has always been false. Why? Server hardware breaks, maintenance windows by hosts, installing new RPMs, upgrading the kernel, technical glitches in the Backbone, and temporary packet loss and or latency are all normal occurences which often cause short down times of 15 minutes to several hours.

We currently use 5 diffirent ISPs to reach the site. On some occassions the site is not reachable via Cable for a few minutes. During this time our DSL and Wireless services reach the site just fine. Try turning your modem off for a few minutes, restarting your computer, using a different dial up number, release/bind your IP, test your line by surfing to other sites like Google, and if all else fails please try a long walk on the beach.

A great site to test your line and our server is Traceroute.org.

We take our visitor experiences very seriously and have always strived to offer you near perfect uptime. If you can't reach the site for an exstended period of time and don't see a Post about our down time and or maintenance, please post all the details in our Technical Questions Forum.

The following facts in your Post will help all of us: The name of your ISP and connection speed, your exact location on planet Earth, the total down time, the date and time period of the down time quoted from your location, and a complete traceroute to this site.
