Default Google image ads - just started playing with them

Google AdSense™ Announcement:
Introducing image ads

Hello,
Google is very pleased to introduce a new feature to your AdSense account.

Image ads

Now, in addition to text ads, you can choose to show highly-targeted image ads on your web pages. Unlike traditional banner ads, Google's image ads are contextually targeted to the content of your page, providing your users with a high impact, high value advertisement - and providing you with the opportunity to earn more revenue.

For the full details about image ads, please read our What's New page at https://www.google.com/adsense/new.

How to contact us

If you have questions or comments about this new feature, or about the AdSense program in general, please email us at adsense-support@google.com. One of our specialists will be happy to help.

Sincerely,

The Google Team

so to enable these you just switch them on in the ad layout area. Doesn't look like any code changes need to be made. I enabled mine. We will see if it makes a difference.

With the initial text ads, I think Google directly took away a lot of publishers from afflilate programs like Amazon.com's. Now with the image ads, Google is gunning for banner ad networks. Hmmm no body is safe anymore.

I switched my ads and I didn't see any yet - also they switched the reporting deal so it shows "last business week" and other time periods

And a new "Ad Type" area as well.

Anyone know sites displaying image ads as of now? Do they take up the whole space or get divided like the text ads?

They take up the whole space. Check the example ads section on the adsense site and it shows examples of the skyscrapers, leaderboards, etc with images. I changed mine a while ago, but have yet to see an ad on any of my sites.

It's going to be a while until you start seeing the actual image ads. Advertisers (such as myself) need to login to Adwords and setup our new image ads. Since the advertisers just got the e-mail last night it's going to take a while before they login and set them up.

I'm really curious as to how this will affect publisher earnings. I'm sure I'll see plenty of you posting to fill me in.

Do the advertisers need to create images for all the ad sizes?

Just go to "Create New Ad" for one of your ad groups and the image option is there.

If you don't upload ads for a particular size how do you expect them to display it? So yes you need to make an image for each size. The resize your images so make sure the ones you make read this

Will you resize my image?

All Google image ads include two elements: your URL to fortify your branding and a feedback link that gives publishers and users a way to request improvements from Google.

We may resize your image vertically by 11 or 22 pixels (depending on the image format you've selected) to make room for these elements while still maintaining the standard overall image sizes. We will not, however, resize your image horizontally. Therefore, your image's proportions will appear slightly different from your original file.

If you'd like to maintain the original proportions of your images, we recommend that you resize them (or recreate them in the appropriate sizes) before you upload them. Your resized options are:

Banner: 468x49
Leaderboard: 728x79
Inline rectangle: 300x239
Skyscraper: 120x578

Somewhere on the google site I read that image ads will only show up when they will pay more than the text ad that would be displayed in its place. So if we do start seeing the image ads, and our users decide to click them, then technically our earnings should see an increase. Hopefully at least.

Google Ads with images, I am excited to see what they got to offer as both a publisher and advertiser (google finally accepted me back in!). Hopefully I can create a simple image ad (simple is really going to be the key, because it should work the same way the text ads do) within a few days and have it running.

I have yet to see any images run on my site though from Google, hopefully advertisers will be able to implement images quickly.
