During October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the CIGNA Foundation will donate $1 for every click on the pink ribbon to their web site, up to $100,000. This gift will be part of their overall contribution to National Denim Day, which solely benefits the Komen Foundation.

Wonderful!
I'm confused as to the economics behind this click-for-charity program in particular, but suppose that at only $1 a pop the effort is seen as an affordable way to build press attention and visitorship to the site, and to consequently boost awareness and support that one little bit further. While we're in this frame of mind, it might also be worth visiting: http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/ This is part of CharityUSA's network of click-to-donate properties (remember TheHungerSite.com?), and while the value of the ad-supported donation made through this site is less than that of CIGNA's, the site does also contain a bumper-crop of information regarding prevention, screening and treatment of this form of cancer.

While we're on the subject, those of you interested in distributed and grid computing may be interested to know that Oxford Uni and the British Government are teaming with IBM to build a Linux-based computing grid that doctors can use to share mammogram data.
Reference: http://cin.earthweb.com/article/1,35...483311,00.html This comes on the back of several humanitarian and scientific projects based on the successful SETI@Home model and the realisation that grids and similar networks can often produce superior results to supercomputer setups where security isn't quite as tantamount, without compromising in terms of cost.
