Web site usability - geek/talk: Signature-free discourse for serious web publishers

I have established a new Web site at www.visibleimpact.com. At 3 weeks old it is doing well. Can someone please go to it and tell me of any usability issues I have not thought of. It has a 'different' look to it!

Tell me what you think when you see it and why or why not you would join the site... need more feedback while it is still young...

Well I'm on a pretty fast connection, and your site took a long time to load. If I were looking for a host, that would be the first thing I would see and probably go elsewhere.

Your page is probably just too graphic-heavy. I'd change it to something more dealing with tables with colors or something than all pictures.

Actually, it is based on tables and the majority of the graphics were indexed down to 10 or less colors. The problem I had was the SSI tags for the freelance/buyer count, top 3 jobs, and and the referral links. I noticed they really put a brake on it. I took them off but I decided it was better to show people the current counts. So I put a JavaScript indicating that the current info was being downloaded to give the browser some eyecandy. I should make it more than text and probably a swinging annimated gif. or something... too bad it is on the homepage. But when I took of the counts the home page looked empty. Initially, I want people to know that others are registering. But I also don't want to loose them to the first criticle 10 seconds of viewing a site...

I did a test on my server at http://webservices.cnet.com/ping/ and it was rated a 78 ms. Which was average I guess. Kind of slow... I am going to research this a little...
