Business practises when dealing with advertisers - geek/talk: Signature-free discourse for serious web publishers

Every now and then I'm approached by a company or web site owner who wants to buy ad space on my websites. These companies have all been US based and the volumes have been low (10k-50k impressions for a few hundred bucks at most). Since there haven't been any large sums involved, I've been able to require that they pay up front (by giving them a slightly reduced price). Also, I have been doing all the tracking of clicks and impressions, by setting up an account in WebAdverts and give them access to it.

What is your experience of selling ad space and doing business with advertisers on your own? Is it OK to demand payment in advance or will the person you're doing business with take that as a sign of distrust? And if you don't require payment up front, have you ever been ******* by an advertiser?

How is payment generally made (I understand that Americans have a thing for writing checks http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif)?

Also, do you or the advertiser do the tracking? If he does, what happens if his stats differ from yours?

I'm interested in any advice you can give on how to do business with advertisers, how to build up trust and what conventions there are. I'd also like to hear about your personal experiences (good and bad) so I know what to think about and what to avoid.

it's payment n advance (doesn't matter what form) and how many ever impressions based on my tracking software (no disputes then).
