Is it the death of manual link building?
Since they're are so many sites out there selling thousands of backlinks for half nothing, would it be fair to say manual link building is a thing of the past?.

Never, because google always like manual work and give preference to manual work because google consider manual work as spamming.

Nope, we can't say that the manual link building is past or not valuable. Google always prefer a manual work and manual link building.

Googlebot has become smarter enough to detect automatic submissions so you have to pay attention carefully before doing such kind of things. A small thing can penalize your rankings
