I have heard that .edu has more weightage than .com domain, how true is this?

EDU Domains are more trusted and authoritative compared to most of the .com, .net, etc domains. And unless you are running an accredited post secondary institution (college) you aren't allowed to register domains with .edu extention and they are restricted to educational institutions.

Well before you set up a domain, make sure that you understand the role of the various parts of a domain. Also read the brief introduction on the Internet to each domain of standards, which sets out the major issues relevant to that domain extension.

Somehow this is true. Anyway it's better to have a .com link on a clean page instead of an edu link on a blog page with 1000 comments.

.com is better than country domain?? eg .hr, .ca, .de???

It's completely true as they are not commercial domains so they are trusted by Search engines easily, but on the other hand it's also hard to collect a dofollow backlink from such domains.
