Default 11 percent have made spam buys

Spam would quickly stop if no one bought anything from spam or responded to it. The bad news is that far too many computer users are buying as a result of spam and clicking on links in spam.

Here are the details of the study that shows how people keep spam healthy by responding in rather large numbers http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/165701661

That's always so painful to read, but it comes as no surprise. Spam is big business, as are a number of other highly aggressive and/or unethical interactive marketing techniques, only because there are enough people in the world who allow themselves to be fooled into buying rubbish they don't need from suppliers who don't truly care about the consumer experience.

Since spammers are clearly less considerate than legitimate retailers and etailers in the way they distribute marketing messages, it would be interesting to see how many actually offer quality after-sales service (or how many actually choose to deliver products at all ), as opposed to those who run their entire businesses in the same unethical fashion as their first point-of-contact would imply.
