Microsoft-friendly Web 2.0 developers (yes, there are some out there) have been waiting anxiously for the release of the company's Flash competitor. Fortunately, Microsoft is on schedule with its launch of the 1.0 version of Silverlight, with the first release candidate expected to debut prior to the end of this month.

Version 1.0 of Silverlight will serve as a cross-browser media platform that supports rich internet applications (RIAs) developed in Javascript. Most MSFT developers, however, seem more interested in playing wait-n-see until version 1.1 comes careening into the Web 2.0 world, since that version is expected to provide support for more complex applications, tapping into the .NET Framework 3 libraries and runtime.

What do you guys-n-gals think of the new platform? Will it successfully encroach on Adobe's market share and provide something fresh to the Web 2.0 scene, or is Microsoft fighting a losing battle against a superior rich-media platform?
