I should build my new Thunderbird 1400mhz with 512 megs of DDR ram soon. I currently have a full backup of my PC on a backup tape. When my new PC is working is it safe to restore the entire backup (including registry, drivers etc...) to the new PC or is it best to re-install every program manually and only restore the files I need?

Thanks

you will have to Pull the Enum registry Key befor you start it normaly for the first time.

IMHO - it is better to make a new clean install.

I am curently working on a Tutorial on this exact subject, but it seem to take at least a week more untill it will be finished (Probably more).
I can create somthing fast on Pulling the Enum if you need thow.

Enum is the place in the registry where windows save all of it's Hardware and drivers settings.
Deleting it (Pulling it) will caous win to redetect all of the hardware and reinstall all drivers.

Since your current main board and hardware confige are diferant from the future ones, you will have to do it.

It mean that after restoring the system you will have to go into the registry and delete the Enum key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

My coming tutorial will show (With screan shots) how to do so.
you will also have to have all the drivers and a win install disk at hand, preferd on the hard drive (at least windows).

hope this will help.
