Yahoo is taking a different approach than Google. They are going to digitize only works that are in the public domain in order to avoid the copyright situation facing Google with their project.
Among those working with Yahoo on this are the University of California and the Internet Archive.
With the Yahoo digitized works, they would be searchable on any search engine and they could be downloaded for free.
