Yahoo to digitize public domain books

Yahoo is taking a different approach than Google. They are going to digitize only works that are in the public domain in order to avoid the copyright situation facing Google with their project.

Among those working with Yahoo on this are the University of California and the Internet Archive.

With the Yahoo digitized works, they would be searchable on any search engine and they could be downloaded for free.

They couldn't have better timed this announcement. Yahoo understands the fickle world of artists and IP, as demonstrated by their exceptionally strong ties with Hollywood and the traditional media. If they're able to stay on the right side of traditional publishers and writers, while indicating that they're more responsive to their needs than Google, while just as ambitious in their outcomes, the big Y will be perfectly positioned to build a solid base of support from the creative element.
