Hey everyone -

Some help if ya don't mind...

I'm trying to understand the whole concept of bandwith as I'm looking into buying my own domain.

The site(s) I run get a combined 8,000 unique visitors per day...If they each visit 10 pages in my site per day and each page is around 80 KB total (with the html and graphics), that means I would use at least 198,400,000 KB per month right? So if I had 30 GB of bandwith (31,457,280 KB right?) I'd be way over the limit. Am I ******* bandwith wise?

What counts for bandwith? Like, if I have graphics that are the same on each and every page, do those only count once per visitor, or since they're on every page, if a visitor goes to 10 pages they count 10 times?

Thanks so much for your help!

Well the problem is that alot of pictures will probably be cached already, especially with return traffic.

Somewhere with your calculation something is incorrect.. because 200gig?.. I don't know but i'm getting 7000 unique's a day.. and i'm getting around 90gig.. but mostly because i have files of 14mb etc and alot of big pictures at my site..

So i think that due to the caching this will be alot less.. It just sounds way too much..

Yeah, it seemed like way too much to me too, but from the little I know about bandwith that's what I came up with.

If anyone could help me out with the math and give me some correct coversion information, that would be great.

Thanks!

Well, there's too much guess work involved here. Don't you have a good statistics program?

This will tell you some of the things you need to know. Like how many pages people see, and what % of your traffic is cached.

For my site, cached stuff runs around 25 - 30%.

Where can I get a good statistics program so I can research this before I decide if it's worth getting my own domain or if I'll have to sell my house to do it :>

I have Hitbox but that's only on my main page and I don't beleive it measures my whole site.

Thanks!

Well, others might have some recomendations for you. I use WebTrends, but that costs some serious $$$, there should be some cheaper alternatives.
