Ok, I've come up with a simple way to beat some scumware, at least TopText, without using Javascript or pop ups or redirects or some other fancy or possibly unsupported method. I can't say if this works with SurfPlus, because their installation fails on my machine.

Ha! What's worse than scumware? Faulty scumware!

Anyone with SurfPlus installed please check these pages and see if it works and let me know.

The method is quite simple: scumware is dumb (dumbware?) and doesn't do a particularly good job of digging out all the possible keywords it can **** off your HTML pages. In fact, any simple and well-placed HTML tag, even one that doesn't affect the display of the page, will interrupt its capability to find a phrase to exploit.

To illustrate, I've created two Web pages. The first is wide open to scumware, the second is virtually identical but is "descummed". If you have scumware enabled on your PC, try them both and note the difference. Also, view the code to see how I accomplished it.

SCUMABLE: http://www.positionguardian.com/scumware/cr.html
DESCUMMED: http://www.positionguardian.com/scumware/cr_descummed.html

If you don't have scumware on your PC, here are two .gif files that illustrate the difference:

SCUMMED: http://www.positionguardian.com/scumware/cr.gif
DESCUMMED: http://www.positionguardian.com/scumware/cr_descummed.gif

So, with minor code changes, you can protect your pages. Let me know what you think. If this proves to be a good way to overcome the scum, I'll consider writing a free online utility to "descum" your pages for you automatically.

This may work for now, but the publishers may catch on and overcome this obstacle. We'll see.

i don;'t have a scumware so cannot test assuming it works it is an OK idea .. however it can be fixed by the scum peeps.. plus since posting here if they come see they will fix faster .. second you will have to know what words it screws up to manual add and that would ****.. so probaly have some generator that you paste text and it creates it with every word with the comment out code liek thing you used... still works, can be fixed, would have to be automated or would **** to do for a whole site. great job on working with ways to defeat it and i welcome more :)

I think its a stretch to say that this has just been 'discovered'

We've all known for a while that by doing Cre<B></b>dit Rep<B></b>ort you can bypass the scumware. But with 1000s of pages, its not really practical.

Another thing to consider is the effect of this approach on your search engine rankings since this technique may also change the way search engines index your site. If you are depending on your search engine rankings for traffic to your site, you will want to be very careful.

Apart from this potential problem I would have to agree that this technique is probably impractical for a website of any size.

Dont be discouraged however. It is good to see people actively working to try and find a solution.

Any fix requires changing the site's content in some way. So potential side effects is a given. I think this is a good idea for those willing to live with the side effects...
