Why is it that a country that is an island has NO decent beaches???

I might be mistaken, but isn't London on a river, Thane or something? I might be totally wrong, but no city built before industrialization is not near water, either a river or an ocean. But nevermind, it
s a "bit" off topic.

Try Alllicks.

Gata,

Sometimes it is necessary to build fake beaches. Such beaches exist here in Chicago, where millions of pounds of sand are poured on several fake beaches here every spring.

The sand is slowly washed away (because it's not natural) and works its way across Lake Michigan to Michigan. Then, because we are TOTAL geniuses, we buy the sand back from Michigan every year, and dump on our beaches. Our tax dollars at work.

And THAT'S how you make MONEY ON THE INTERNET.

Can anyone offer a decent click-through rate for sending unique visitors to beaches in London?

'Fake sand' is brought to Waikiki and even many of the famous surfing beaches up and down the So. California coast. Coney Island was a "fake beach". Sadly, the British Isles are not blessed with the weather of the above nor are the beaches of Michigan..but a beach is a beach is a beach..and my toes can't tell the difference. The only question is..how teeny are the bikini's? http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

I beg to differ!

Michigan beaches have some of the best summer weather around. From about now til mid-September, you get sunshine and pleasant temperatures along with stretches of the finest fresh-water beach in the world.

Just my little, heavily biased opinion.

No slight intended Michigan...but beach weather in Hawaii and SanDiego is 12 mths of the year..thus there are 7 extra months for judging the bikini's. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif
P.S. Having a partiality I can not deny..Is there something 'unatural' in the first place about a 'fresh water' sand beach? Thus wouldn't that make it perfectly 'natural' to import sand to one? Just a thought.

Now...back to the beach.

I just heard on the news today that alot of beaches in Michigan will most likely be closed most of the summer time due to high bacterial levels...

I remember a while back when we never had to worry about this (only broken glass bottles) http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

It is the WATER that has the bacteria..
Water doesn't effect the sand does it?
Or does the bacteria creep out of the water and travel through the sand? http://geekvillage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

You ever wonder why they let people walk their dogs at the beach? There are no fire-hydrants, no trees and usually no bushes (unless you are in Mississippi, where for some genius reason they planted tall grass to keep the wind from blowing the sand into the Gulf).

Broken bottles and glass can hurt ya, but I keep my shoes on because of dogs

Once, I walked on the beach
and stepped on a dog.
I was busy looking at a baby
that had been rolled in the sand.
It looked like a big Almond Rocca.

If you have ever lived by the beach or owned a dog, you'll agree that one of the most natural things to do is to take your dog to the beach on a warm, lovely afternoon...
All you gotta do is make sure to walk the dog before you actually go to the beach, so that it'll do all it needs to do (if you know what I mean). Then, it's all play... http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

Did you know that every single beach in the state of florida is public? Anyone can go to any beach - even if it's right in front of the kennedy place.

As for freshwater beaches - I prefer them. You don't have to take a shower 3 minutes after getting out of the water.....and no jelly fish.

Lakes have shorelines..these can be mud..sand or grass and rocks..what is missing is the true mystery of the sea. Silly lake monsters aside, when one is in the ocean or at a REAL beach..one KNOWS there are strange and wonderful things beneath the surface that stretches for a thousand miles of unknown depths. At any moment a pirate ship can be released from a watery grave and rise before you..or any number of things from antiquity to recent times can wash ashore.(please no Med. waste tales) Yes maybe even a real sea monster or two or at least a 20ft Great White. The beach that enters the sea, any sea, is the most romantic mystical place on the planet...because before it,is a cinemascope view of the most dangerous and beautiful part of the planet.
As to dog poop, it's just another part of the food chain once the sea reclaims it at hight tide.
On a lake shore it's just litter,
as are dogs who are not picked up after.
P>S> DO take a shower after a lake swim. Take some lake water and put it under a microscope.
Lake water doesn't smell the way it does because its cleansed regularly.

Beaches should all be free and public. I find it odd, the idea of someone saying, "hey! You kids get off my beach!"

I'd probably have to deploy the finger, and no one wants that... http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

Doug
05-18-2000, 04:54 PM
Deployment of a finger on a 'private beach' is a felony in most states on Friday. If you must be rude to a misguided property owner who was sold a bit of goods about privacy issues, then please return on Wednesday when it's merely a 'warning ticket'. Studies have also shown that most beach 'owners' are not home on Wednesday, which is a court appearance day. Our resident legal eagle would attest to this if he hadn't been insulted and flipped off on the BB the other day by an errantly deployed finger of 'reason'.
Right Fair?

When I was little a bunch of us kids would go to this beach and this old man would come out of his house yelling at us to get "off his private property"

But something happened one time and it needed to be cleaned up and this old timer called the city and wanted them to do it and pay for it with the cities tax money...

Go figure...
I wonder if the city gave him the finger on a Friday or Wednesday? http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

Doug
05-18-2000, 05:09 PM
I'm sure the city ignored him as successfully as it did/does everyone else..and if the truth be known, all that junk in need of clean-up was probably deposited there by bunches of kids!
In government cases, 'they' are allowed to flip off a citizen on Mondays without reprocussion as well as every April 15th.

Please? It would be fun to see where it would wind up by July 4th! It would be theraputic too. Everybody needs a bit of nonsense that has absolutely no relation to anything relevant..I mean the title alone is a winner. Speaking of which..What about Blackpoole Pleasure Beach. Is it as beachless as it is black pooless?

Steve,

I read an article the other day about this message board (actually an email list) for women who are pregnant. They ended up getting together in florida to meet in real life and have a sort of weekend party during the summer. Do you see where I'm going? Bus tickets are pretty cheap (for us college kids) these days and I think it would be incredible to meet some of these people for real. Getting a train (or bus) ticket for people like Singloon and WildComputer could prove difficult though. Just thought I would throw the idea out there.
