Hey geeks:
There's this girl that i promised I would take on the most awesome date of her life, and I have no idea what to do! What are some cool ideas? It has to be more of a fun/awesome date as friends than a romantic one.
I'm not sure "geeks" are the right ones to be asking this one, but help me out here, guys!

Well, if there was a special girl out there who I wanted to show a really good time, I'd do the following:

Introduce her to PHP3, and thoroughly explain why it is better than Perl and that stuff that runs on NT: ASP. I'd explain the benefits of using it, and how dynamic your pages can become by using it. I'd walk her through the basics, and show her how to write some basic scripts, you never know when it'll come in handy. If she was a cute blonde, I'd probably go further into how to set, update, get data from, and delete cookies. If things seemed to be going good from there, I'd move slowly into explaining mySQL and how to perfrom basic queries. If she grasps the basics of mySQL and maybe a bit more, then you KNOW you have her hooked!

Once you've reached that point, I shouldn't really have to tell you what to do, it really depends on where you want your relationship to go. Do you want it to go the ColdFusion route, or maybe the Macromedia Flash route?

Good luck buddy!

I think that's a great tip Spencer, except this one is probably a romance killer:

explain why it is better than... ...that stuff that runs on NT: ASP.

If she is more an offline type of person, that the C++ Standard Template Library is a good alternative.

You're right Wild, it really just depends on whether she is an NT girl, or a Unix girl.

Is she really attractive, but demands lots of your resources? Is she prone to have mood swings? Is she easily influenced by your "friends" tricks? Chances are, she's an NT girl.

Is she not as attractive, but very easy going and stable? Is she pretty good at filtering out junk others tell her, but hard to figure out some times? Chances are, she's a UNIX girl.

Hope this helps clear it up a bit.

PS: All you geeks who haven't figured out HOW to get a date yet, I think I've found the solution http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

Is she raster or vector?

Just ask her please http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

A great date for a raster girl is gausian blur. A few hours of that makes for a really memoriable experience. No, it's not a band.

On the other hand, if shes a vector kinda gal, they are always harder to please. You really have to work hard. Try a motion tween with a Guide layer. That always works.

Good luck m3rcury http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

Almost choked on my coffee reading this thread. You guys are too much! LOL

The most awesome date of her life...that's a tall order. Let's see...

You could start off with a nice dinner taco bell...and you split the bill.

Then you could go bowling....to one of the places that has a computerized system. Make sure you explain the technology involved, the programming, etc. cause that is the important part. Of course, explain the mathematics ehind achieving a perfect score of 300.

Then, you could take her to your local arcade. Oohh...just thing of the the computer talk there...the graphics, the AI of the game...and if you have a Dave and Buster's you can have a drink too!

Then, to top off the evening and wind things down, take her to an Internet Cafe. Over a hot cup of mocha the two of you could join a virtual chat. See...this is not romantic and a couple type of thing, but intimate as a friend kind of thing. No kinky stuff in the chat now...it has to be webmaster development chat or you will spoil the mood.

I have a lot more ideas...if you need them! http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

It's hard to answer without knowing the interests of the people involved but dinner/comedy club/dancing combination is usually fun and safe...it is hard to ***** that up...unless you can't dance and if that is the case, skip that part. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

It's hard to have the most awesome date and not have a romantic aspect because you can't sweep her off her feet. She will have a good time cause she is with you. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

Good ideas, but I think the chat is getting a bit extreme http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif I think we have left out the non-computer geek ideas, though. If you are a math wiz, try the following:

Show her how you are attempting to calculate the real value of pi. Then see if you guys can't figure out another decimal place for it! I can't think of anything else that would be less romantic and more fun! If that isn't enough, go pick up a few shakes or coffee's and practice writing new encryption algorithims.

If your interest is in political science/history, you can go to your local Burger King and have a long discussion about world history and politics over a Whopper Extra Value meal. There are so many options here, that you'll just have to go off your own instincts. However, no discussion in political science can be complete without the following:
Discuss past political philosophers; Hobbes, Locke, and Jefferson are good choices to start with.

THOROUGHLY discuss the reasons, ideologies, and effects of 3 or more French Revolutions (going into all 1,345 of them would probably be a bit tedious at this point in your relationship).

Discuss in detail about how the Monroe Doctrine shaped America, and some of the negative effects of it.

Discuss the new global economy and the challenges that accompany it. Be sure to touch on the WTO/IMF and the protests surrounding them. Bonus points if your date includes going to a WTO/IMF protest!

Anyone have any more non-computer geek ideas?

PS http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif
Sorry if this isn't helping much Shane, but what did you expect? http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif Btw, what CAN you do in Idaho? Perhaps go to the potato museum?

Hey, if it doesn't work out, you can still use this thread as a backup: Print it out and say, "Hey, it might not have been the most awesome date of your life, but at least we didn't do any of THIS stuff!" LOL

take care buddy http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif

So, how'd the date go? If she's an NT girl, I suggest not calling her back...

This is really geeky (and a bit embarassing as it is my idea). But why not find out your decimal anniversary (every 100th day together).

Ok m3rcury,
Let's see if I cna't give you some deceent advise here, NOT related to geekdom (believe me geeks, some of us do try and see the sun on a daily basis and I dont mean a sun sparc).

What kind of date to plan totally depends on you and her. If you have a deceent relationship and really want go all out then litterally go out. Clean your car, pack a bag (remember to leave her pleanty of space) and go find a nice trip camping on the beach, go river raft, do something extreme. Not only will you have a ton of fun, but you'll totally get to know the girl and if she's like 90% of the girls out there, she'll be/act scarred allowing you to show just how manly you are (heh).

On the other hand, if you're looking to go on a normal romantic date then do it in normal fasion but fun at the same time. Find a nice event, be it a concert, sporting event, or even a short trip to a fun, but special place. Afterwords pick out a deceent place to eat dinner but instead of totally romantic, pick something in a club or with some sort of live preformance. After words you could check out a theme park (or maybe before), or something like that.

The truth is, no one can really tell you what would work well for a fun date except someone you really know. Geeky or not, we don't really know you and certainly don't know her. What I might like or find to be fun for a date may be horrifying for you, it really just depends.

Just remember, if all else fails GET A TATOOO!
