Do any of you fellow geeks here take your time off to do something else besides updating your site?

I have not work on my site for weeks because I am glued to the tv!

Some of you may find it interesting to know that Euro2000.com has just won a lawsuit in France which was started by UEFA. Le Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris agreed last Tuesday that Euro2000.com could rightfully use its name. This is the first time that the owner of an internet domain name has won a case of this kind.

Euro 2000 is the 2nd largest sporting event after the World Cup and Olympics.

It is a football ( or soccer as Americans like to called it ) tornament between european nations.

Hope this clear things up a bit.

We're in the US and Euro 2000 means jack to us. We only watch the NBA Finals (just finished), Super Bowl, and World Series, and they don't last weeks. You said you don't have time to update your site, but you have time to watch a ball roll around in a grass field for hours with no action??? Most of us don't even consider soccer a sport and because it's boring as church. Therefore, unlike most euros we got better things to do, and I don't just mean making websites.

The only reason it's the second or most popular event is because there are more euros in europe than americans in US. Each event have like 15 million countries participating. Well DUD, of course it's consider the most popular.

I'd take soccer anyday over baseball or football. Basketball, I can still watch.

But baseball, you sit there for three hours and somebody makes ONE run! Football, they play for two seconds and somebody gets hit, and you have to play from there... slow!!

TO KHN:

Nothing can change soccer is the most popular sport in the world.
Why this? because it's not boring, it's exciting.
Americans have different traditions and love sports that noone want even to hear about in Europe.

Baseball? it's an american game but it's often considered as the most boring sport in the world.

Football? mmmmmmm not very funny......but nice.

Nba: i considered it the most exciting game of all sports.....together with soccer.

The problem with american sports is that it's
dominated by advertising, I was watching the
NBA finals and the LA Lakers stadium is known as the "staples center" - staples being a nationwide office supply store, commercials are far too frequent to enjoy the sport (even if it's enjoyable). That's why I think football (soccer) is far more enjoyable, at least you get 45 mins of sport.

Kev I V,

If you think they don't score runs in baseball then you haven't been watching the millenium baseball version. Most games average 10-15 runs these days. The Yankees just scored 22 runs againce the red sox in one game last week. How many time had you ever see anybody in soccer scored 10 goals in one game.

As in the great word of Jim Rome.

"Something that does not involved your hand is not a sport."
JimRome.com

If you don't know who jim rome is then go visit his smaking web site.

McP,

Every new arena or stadium these days uses corporate name since they paid them 100 million or more for the name. It's because no big company ever support a soccer stadium, doesn't mean that you need to blame on the advertisers. Speaking of advertsing, just look at the soccer player's jersey. One some team, their jersey is like a frekin billboard. Coca Cola, Pepsi, Corona, and millions more advertisers. Heck, some of the ad logo are even bigger than the team logo.

Plus, the owners need dough from advertisers to feed a $150,000,000 player like Shaq.

Poz,

Soccer and the world exciting??? HAHA!!!

How do you define the word exciting?? You said baseball is boring but you probably never watch a MLB game before. They average 10-20 runs per game, and sometime even more. In soccer, you're lucky to get 5 goals for both team. WWF is more of a sport than soccer.

What is this turing to?? 1 legitimate american againce 30 euros?? I can't beleive there are more euros at this board than americanas??

OK, I've kept away from this because I've been too busy watching the football ( or soccer if you prefer ), but now as sorry excuse of a team that England are have long limped out of the tournament then I thought I'd say few things.

I don't have a problem with American sports... I think some of them are quite good, and I have made an effort to watch them because I love sport. But Football is far and away the most popular sport in the world.

That is because.... it is exciting. What most of our American friends to understand that scoring a goal isn't the only thing that makes it exciting. I watched Zidane on the ball and every time he received it was breathtaking. His control is outstanding.

The other thing that makes it great is that the players are not physical freaks. Playing soccer isn't about being 7ft tall or weighing 350lbs... it's about skill. Speed stamina all count but we have great players who are 5ft 6ins as well as 6ft 5ins. The players are relatively normal, though superfit physical specimens. The upshot of this is that anyone can play the game... not to the level of the great players. but we can try. All you need is a ball ( you don't even need a goal to play it... you can even practice by yourself ).

What bemuses most non-americans about American sports is the insular attitude they have. All your sports are domestic competitions with no international participation ( other countries may play the sports but no organised international competitions seem to exist ). And yes your sports are basically designed for Adveritising.

But soccer is big big business. The biggest valued sports club in the world is a soccer team ( Manchester United ), valued around USD1.8billion and they wouldn't allow their stadium to be renamed the "Coca-Cola" stadium on grounds of tradition. Barcelona won't accept advertising on their shirts because they are the Catalan "national" colours and they won't see them defaced by advertising. But we do have plenty of stadiums named with adverisers such as the Reebok Stadium, the march of advertising is relentless especially in a game so much in demand.

So Americans enjoy your sports... just as I enjoy other sports such as Cricket ( yes it can last 5 days and end in a draw... thats what makes it great ), but Soccer has emerged as the global game, it has become that because the market ( the people ) willed it so. The US marketing machine has invested so much money into their sports Soccer probably will never succeed there.

Oh to the guy who said Soccer was a communist game... I consider the draft system employed in the American sports as an essentially socialist system compared to the free-market transfer/signing system employed in the Soccer world.

It domestic is because we don't need 50 countries to join to just make a league. That's why we have 50 stats and canada. If each states were a country, you would of call it world wide to hah?? US and Canada is way bigger than all the European countries combined.

Plus, every else in the world S**KS at basketball or football. So why would we need anybody else in the world to play againce us?? We tried that already and it's not fun when you win every single game that you play againce the world. Another thing, the NBA, MLB, and NFL are where the money is at. Good foreign play come over here to play and the scrubbs go to europe. Leaving europe with tons of horable players.

It's not that basketball is not a worldwide sport, it's because we already know who rule the basketball world. There is no point in playing if one team keep on winning. The USA team don't even have the best players from the NBA and we always kick A** . Other countries just give up because they know they have no chance.

Last point, all the NBA superstars are 10 million times better than any other foreign superstar. Euros hate american sports because they have not seen the best performed in baseball, basketball, or football.

$1.8 Billion is NOTHING!!!

You probably know the New Yankees right?? Well the owner is one of the riches man on earth with billions and billions of dollar. No, the stadium is not a coporate name, Yankees Stadium. His team salery alone is around 80 millions.

Also, Ted Turner, another billionair, former owner of Time Warner got billions and billions, own the Atlanta Braves (baseball team). There are a few more billion owners out there.

"I consider the draft system employed in the American sports as an essentially socialist system compared to the free-market transfer/signing system employed in the Soccer world."

What the hell are you talking about??? We got something called FREE-AGENT buddy!! The draft only happen to college players to make it fair for bad teams by getting them the best player. After a the contract runs out, the player could sign with the same team or go else where. This is the the 1930's when the team own the player till he died.

Man, most americans here are total geeks, they absolutely have no opion in sports. I gotta go to the ESPN boards or somthing.

Well Poz,
Yes I like Zidane, he is outstanding as is Davids and Del Piero when he regains fitness.. Juve will be difficult to beat this year.

KHN,
Your statements simply confirm to all how insular your attitudes are. European sports are all fought domestically, but we have combined competitions to play against other countries. Nobody else in the world really plays your sports... and yes of course American clubs will beat the opposition... But by not playing internationally the sports will never develop elsewhere. The European wide competitions lead to countries getting better. They may lose at first but being involved in the International competitions brings up the standard. Galatarasary ( a Turkish club ) won the UEFA cup this year... ten years ago that would be impossible, they would have been beaten 5-0 in the first round.. they have improved through exposure to competition.

You also fail to grasp the concept of a clubs value... Manchester United are worth more than the NY Yankees... the owner of the Yankees may personally be rich, but that applies to many European clubs who are owned by Billionairre industrialists... rich owners are not unique to the US, but the actual value of the club is the point.

The comment about the draft system is essentially a throwaway line to stimulate debate, I actually think its a good idea..... The draft system exists to ensure no one club totally dominates by simply buying the best young players up. That doesn't exist in Soccer and increasing the sport is dominated by a few very wealthy clubs. It is socialist in that it is an attempt by the authorities to control the supply of goods and fix their price( the players ) against the forces of the free market.

Italy is not much stronger than Holland but surely have better players.

Maldini-Nesta-Cannavaro are 100 times better than Dutch's defence

Fiore-Zambrotta-Albertini-Di Biagio-Pessotto? the first 2 are very good.

I don't know if Totti and Inzaghi are better that Kluivert and Bergkampg.......but remember we have also Del Piero, the best italian player.

And we lost Vieri and Buffon....

I just wonder sometimes how american would know that their sport is the best when they only compete among themselves?

Isn't it ironic, they say they are the best but they don't want to fight it out on the battle field.

I personally try to appreciate every sport or traditon any country have. But I find it difficult to get interested in sports i dont play myself or have no support for any team or individual.

If soccer is not a multi bil dollar industry then why did US bid for the world cup ?

Well, one thing is for sure, soccer in us is catching up heat and may be a potential revenue source for US companies IF THEY DONT IGNORED it.

KHN,
Basketball could perhaps be developed by the top European sides playing the top US teams in an end of season competition.... the US teams would win as Basketball is really only a minority sport in most of Europe, but over time the increased exposure of the game could perhaps lead to better European teams and a more global sport... But that happens only if the game is interesting enough to the public, and whether it would be is debatable.. taken as sport by itself Basketball is interesting, but it lives on its own marketing hype in the US, and Europeans are possibly less likely to buy that hype. As for the comment that NBA players wouldn't want to live in Europe.... you still return to your insular stance, you probably haven't visited Europe and probably don't know any NBA stars so I find it strange what you feel so able to comment for them.
Yes the Women's soccer team in the US are the best... but then Women's soccer is more popular in the US than anywhere else so I don't see what proves apart from countries where a sport is popular tend to excel in that sport... a point nobody doubts.

I don't want to argue with this topic anymore but what wozza said is quite correct.

Anyway anyone notice the giving of many dubious penalty in the tournament?

There are at least 4 or 5 calls that are questionable. I think is a bit unfair to the weaker nations.

I bet you 9 1/1 out of 10 NBA players will say NO if they had a choice of playing in europe.

Most NBA player don't even want to play in Canada. Most players got drafted by canadian teams and they want out. Not that the teams **** in canada, they have to pay more taxes. Also, because they want to be with their family, an 8 months season is hell of a long time. If they don't even want to live across the border, how will they live in europe?? Plus europe is like 10 million miles away, it would cost too much to develope a any team over there.

KHN,

If no NBA players ever wanted to play in Europe that would be such a sad reflection on them. If they really didn't want to experience another culture.. didn't want to broaden their horizons then that is so sad. I have not visited as many countries as I would like, but wherever I have been has been a learning and life-enriching experience. Its a big beautiful world out there, and if people don't want to find out about it then they are the poorer for that decision.

Yes! Italy in the final!!!
I am sorry diederik.

TO ALL:
What an argue for nothing.
I don't like american sports (except NBA) and don't bother if they rules the world in such sports.
I love soccer, i love tennis, i love volleyball, i love cycling, track and field and formula 1. I don't love those because my country is the best with them (we are ridicolous in tennis and track and field) but because they give me special emotions.
I don't bother if they don't brings as much money as american sports. It doesn't matter that soccer is the most popular sport in the world. We love it for many reasons.....

TO KHN: ok, Nba is great but be sure that also player like Ronaldo, Batistuta, Zidane and Davids would never go to play in Usa with american teams. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I would never exchange our sports champions with your champions.
We don't need them.

The last point: if i am not wrong sport was born in Europe......Greece?
Many americans would say they invented sport. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/smile.gif
They also claimed the invention of pizza. http://geekvillage.com/ubb/tongue.gif
